The Gaultheria procumbens branching from Ericaceae family is the key source of producing the winter green oil. Owing to its therapeutic and healing properties it is been demanded on a wider scale. This shrub is mostly found in the Northern parts of America and is also known by its other names like teaberry or checkerberry. It gains the height of about 15cm and bears white flowers, serrated leaves along with red berries. The steam distillation process is applied to its already macerated leaves for extracting the essential winter green oil. The extracted liquid varies its colour from slight yellow to reddish brown. It spreads a fresh and minty aroma in its surroundings. It is advised that the oil is not consumed orally as it is highly toxic in nature, nor should it be applied to aromatherapies.
